New Forest Class Page

New Forest is a lively and welcoming Year 2 classroom taught by Mrs Chaudhry and Miss Hovelmann.

The class is also supported by Mrs Howcroft, who works with small groups and provides focused intervention sessions to help children make the best progress possible.

In Year 2, children begin to move gradually towards a more structured style of learning, while still enjoying plenty of active and practical experiences. Our aim each day is to create engaging and imaginative opportunities that build on each child’s individual strengths and needs.

Reading and writing are key priorities in New Forest. Each morning starts with a phonics session, following the Little Wandle programme. This approach supports children in learning to read and spell through carefully sequenced teaching and fully decodable books, which are changed weekly. In English lessons, we explore high quality texts through the Talk for Writing approach. Children also take part in guided reading sessions, which develop fluency, comprehension and phonics skills.

Maths is taught using the White Rose programme, which follows a mastery approach. This allows children to build core skills in a practical way, creating a strong foundation for future learning.

We value the role of home learning and encourage children to read regularly, practise their weekly spelling sentences, and complete their activities on Doodle Maths and Doodle English.

PE takes place twice a week and includes a variety of indoor and outdoor activities that develop skills progressively. Wherever possible, we link learning across the curriculum so that children are fully immersed in their topics.

We look forward to sharing the year with you as the children discover, explore and grow in New Forest.
