Head teacher final letter Apr 2022
Oakhill Class
Welcome to Oakhill
Oakhill comprises of Years 1 and 2. The class is a dynamic and vibrant learning environment taught by Mrs Grimbleby and Mrs Hutton.
In Oakhill we are fortunate to have additional support from key adults, Miss Hovelmann, Mrs Howcroft and Mr Trickett to work in class offering high quality small group work and numerous intervention sessions. Mrs Casson and Mrs Mattheis also support in Oakhill.
This class sees pupils move towards a more ‘formal’ way of learning, which is still active and engaging. While our Year 1 pupils will still initially continue to access the superb areas of provision open to our Reception friends, their learning is more structured with set outcomes. They will also start to work in a more ‘focused’ manner with the year twos.
The main aim every day is to offer the children practical, imaginative and engaging learning opportunities tailored to meet the needs of each individual child in the class.
The teaching of reading and writing is given high priority with each day starting with a phonics session. Research shows that to get every child reading and spelling we need to teach phonics with a systematic and explicit approach, we follow Little Wandle, a systematic synthetic phonics programme with carefully matched fully decodable books, which are changed weekly. During our English lessons we explore high quality texts using the Talk 4 Writing approach. The children have opportunity to practise their reading skills within the guided reading sessions; reading to an adult, comprehension skills and phonic consolidation.
Our school implements White Rose Maths which embeds maths through the mastery approach ensuring children learn essential core skills practically, which then lay a solid foundation for more formal learning later on.
We appreciate the value of home learning, and therefore we encourage children to change their home reading books frequently as well as learning the weekly spelling sentences and complete their Doodle Maths and English.
PE is twice a week, and we cover a variety of indoor and outdoor activities and progressive skills. Wherever possible we provide cross-curricular lessons so that the children are fully immersed in their topic. We hope you enjoy following along with us as we discover, explore and grow in Oakhill.
